The city’s historic district has been recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site since 1973. Its main nucleus, with an elongated configuration, in large part surrounded by ancient walls, rises high above a vast rocky plateau, the peña tajada referred to in the Romancero Viejo, perched on the shores of the Duero River, which forms its southern limits. These characteristics earned it the nickname la bien cercada (“the well-enclosed one”).
